Biodiesel Kits - Making Biodiesel - Biodiesel Production
Biodiesel is compatible with any
diesel engine and is made from
natural oils rather than petroleum.

Biodiesel performs similarly to
regular diesel fuel and can be used
with no modifications to the diesel
engine or the vehicle.

The refining process, known as
esterification, employs an industrial
alcohol such as ethanol or methanol
and a catalyst to convert the oil into
a fatty-acid methyl ester fuel.
Derived from natural oils, biodiesel is a domestic, renewable fuel for diesel engines. It
is registered with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is legal for use in
any concentration with petroleum-based diesel fuel for the operation of both highway
and non-road diesel vehicles.

Contrary to popular belief, biodiesel is not simply raw vegetable oil, but motor fuel
made from any vegetable oil such as soybean oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, or recycled
cooking oils or animal fats by means of a chemical process which removes the glycerin
from the oil.

A 5 gallon bucket of canola seed will yield 1 gallon of vegetable oil and 1 ton of
soybeans yields 25 gallons of oil. One gallon of oil will yield one gallon of biodiesel.

Biodiesel has a much higher lubricity than diesel fuel. That means a smoother running
engine, cleaner fuel injection components and a longer engine life. And with a cetane
rating that is substantially higher than petrol diesel, Biodiesel leaves minimal carbon
deposits in your engine.

Because of biodiesel's solvent properties there's a possibility that fuel lines in older
diesel engines may degrade. Especially susceptible are fuel lines made from natural
rubber. Fuel lines incorporating natural rubber should be replaced with biodiesel
compatible parts.

Lower Cost Per Gallon
Biodiesel produced by an individual costs substantially less than petrol diesel fuel—
often as little as $0.85 per gallon.

Renewable Fuel
Unlike fuel made from a finite resource such as crude oil, biodiesel is made from
renewable organic resources that can be re-grown, reproduced and reused.

Reduces Carbon Emissions
Additionally, biodiesel reduces emissions of carbon monoxide, particulate matter,
sulfates, and hydrocarbons.

Biodiesel Safety
Caution should be taken when handling the caustic chemicals and methanol used in
the production biodiesel. Safety equipment should include rubber gloves, protective
goggles, vinyl apron, respirator, and a fire extinguisher rated for flammable liquids.

Install the equipment and store the chemicals in a secure, well ventilated area away
from children and pets.

Check with your local fire marshal to make sure the storage and handling of raw
materials are in accordance with local fire codes.

Using home made biodiesel in a diesel engine vehicle may void your manufacturer's
warranty.

Biodiesel manufactured for on road use may be subject to taxation. Check with your
state revenue department and the IRS for biofuel production tax guidelines

And, just as important, don't forget to ask about the ever changing list of tax
incentives intended to promote the production and use of biodiesel.

Across the board, biodiesel is widely accepted as a superior green alternative fuel.
Because it burns significantly cleaner than petrol diesel it's nearly carbon neutral and
non-toxic reducing carbon life cycle emissions by 78%.

That’s equivalent to removing 700,000 cars from the nation’s highways.

The prices for a biofuel processors range between
$2,500 and $13,500. The higher priced models
incorporate more automation, have larger capacities, and
require far less "hands on" time per batch.

The least expensive models have batch runs of 40
gallons and require about 2 hours of hands on time while
the more expensive processors have batch runs of 100
gallons and require little more from the operator than
adding the ingredients and pushing a button.

The typical batch run time from start to finish is 48 hours.

process nuts, beans, and seeds into usable oil for
converting into biodiesel.
