Solar Heaters for Swimming Pools
If you have an above ground
swimming pool, the new solar
swimming pool heaters are an
easy, cost effective way to raise
the temperature of your pool by
10 degrees or more.
This is often the difference
between a refreshing dip and
the plunge that takes your
breath away.
Solar heaters for swimming
pools are sold as 2' x 20' panels
for around $130 each. Two sets
of panels 4' x 20' sell for about
$250.
If you are installing the panel far away from your equipment, you will need to purchase
extra hose.
When you first turn on the panels they will be hot to the touch for the first fifteen
minutes. Thereafter they will be cool to the touch. The difference in temperature is the
heat being transferred to the water in your pool.
While solar heaters can significantly reduce energy costs, there are non-solar steps
you can take to help reduce the heating bill.
One overlooked cost is the power required to run the filter circulation system.
Purchasing a high powered pump will save money. The faster the pump works, the
less time it will need to be on.
Next, make sure you use a pool cover. A pool cover prevents evaporation loss,
particularly at night. The cover traps the solar heat that has been added during the
day. This is very complementary to the solar system. The solar system can be viewed
as actively adding heat. The cover retains that heat passively.
When pool season is over, roll up the panels and store them away until next year. If
you don’t they will freeze and crack.

A 4' x 20' panel is enough to heat an 18 - 24 foot round
pool. "Junior" systems are also available. These smaller
4' x 10' panels are enough to heat a 16' round pool. A 10
year warranty is common with the larger 2' x 20' panels.
For areas where the swimming season is year round, or
your pool is in the shade, an additional panel may be
needed to heat your pool during the cooler months. (See
the sizing chart below)
Installation is simple and should take only 30
minutes. Simply connect one hose from the
pool filter to the system inlet, and a second
hose between the system outlet and the
pool inlet. Unroll the solar panel and you're
done.
Although it isn't necessary to permanently
mount the solar panels, plans are available
from the pool dealer or manufacturer to build
a platform or rack. Mounting the panels on
the garage roof is also an option.
